The Treaty of Lake Poygan arranged for the sale of convert|4500000|acre|km2 of
Menominee Indian lands to the government of theUnited States for $350,000 plus convert|6000000|acre|km2 inCrow Wing County, Minnesota , to which theMenominee s were asked to move. It was negotiated onOctober 18 ,1848 atLake Poygan ,nearWinneconne, Wisconsin . Provisions of the treaty were not carried out, asChief Oshkosh , in 1852, persuaded PresidentMillard Fillmore to permit the tribe to remain on itsWolf River lands inWisconsin .
