The Das-Naglieri Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) test is a test given to school children to assess their cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

History

Developed by Jack Naglieri, PhD, a psychologist at George Mason University and psychologist J.P. Das, PhD of the University of Alberta in 1997.

The test is based on the theories of Soviet neuropsychologist A.R. Luria, some similarities to Alan S. Kaufman's KABC. The Cognitive Assessment System CAS is theory based. The PASS theory of intelligence is the basis for the CAS.

Present Use

CAS assesses a student’s planning, attention, simultaneous and successive processes (PASS). It is used among educational-psychologist because it gives good guidelines to educational interventions.

Criticisms

In independent factor analytic studies conducted by Tim Keith and John Kranzler after the CAS was first published the 4 factor PASS model could not be reliably replicated. Instead a 3 factor model (PA)SS model, combining the planning and attention factors together was found to fit the data best. Although Naglieri took issue with the research in submitting several rebuttals, additional studies have replicated the Keith and Kranzler results indicating that there remain significant questions about the construct validity of the CAS. Other researchers question why a full scale score (which correlates rather high with other global IQ scores) is included since the test is marketed as an alternative to traditional IQ tests.
