The line was opened as part of the Bergen Line in 1909, and until the opening of
Oslo Central Station and theOslo Tunnel in 1980 that passenger traffic went via Drammen on the Randsfjord Line and theDrammen Line to Oslo. There were also previously local train services on the line, but they have also been terminated. It was renamed from "Roa–Hønefosslinjen" to "Roa–Hønefossbanen" on 6 January 2008.
