The Queanbeyan Age

The Queanbeyan Age

"The Queanbeyan Age" is a weekly newspaper based in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, Australia. First published on the 15th September, 1860 by John Gale and his brother, Peter Francis Gale, "The Golden Age", as it was known at the time, was the first newspaper of the small township on the banks of the Queanbeyan River. It was named due to the shortlived Kiandra goldrush, which generated large amounts of gold-based traffic through the region.

These days, "The Queanbeyan Age" publishes once a week on Fridays. It has a readership of approximately 15,000 [See "The Queanbeyan Age" Friday, October 20, 2006, p4] or about 40 per cent of the population of the city. The newspaper previously published twice a week, and prior to that it was published three times a week. The paper currently publishes in 40 or 48 page editions, which contain local news, community news, business, arts and entertainment, sport, a TV Guide and a puzzles page.

It survives with only two full-time reporters - one for sport, and one for all other news.

The editor is Elizabeth Rolfe and the manager is Matthew Featherston.

"The Queanbeyan Age" has a close relationship with "The Canberra Times", and relies on it for its printing presses in order to create the publication. Since July 2006, it has been working in much closer relationships with both "The Canberra Times" and "The Canberra Chronicle" - all three papers are owned by Fairfax Media.

It has been available on the Internet since about 2000.

The Queanbeyan Age also distributes a quarterly magazine, known as "Homefront".
