Its seat is the village of Janów Podlaski, which lies approximately convert|20|km|mi|0 north of Biała Podlaska and convert|115|km|mi|0|abbr=on north-east of the regional capital Lublin.

The gmina covers an area of convert|135|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 5,553.

The gmina contains part of the protected area called Podlasie Bug Gorge Landscape Park.
