halloffame = 1967Walter Edward "Turk" Broda (
May 15 ,1914 -October 17 ,1972 ) was a formerice hockey goaltender for theToronto Maple Leafs .He was born in
Brandon, Manitoba onMay 15 ,1914 to aPolish-Canadian family. He joined the Maple Leafs in 1936.In 1941 he won the
Vezina Trophy and was be selected to be on the All Star Team. The next year Broda had another great season leading Toronto to aStanley Cup and being selected on the second all- Star team. From 1943 to 1945 Broda left hockey to serve in the military during theSecond World War . When he came back he later led Toronto to three more Stanley Cups and won another Vezina Trophy and to be selected on the 1948 first All star team. In 1951 he won his last Stanley Cup with Toronto and retired in 1952. He was inducted to theHockey Hall of Fame in 1967 and died onOctober 17 ,1972 , aged only 58, after having suffered aheart attack . In 1998, he was ranked number 60 on "The Hockey News "' list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players.Turk Broda's parents came from the southeastern Polish province of Podkarpackie, an area that had a mixed Polish and Ukrainian ethnic population. There is no doubt as to Turk's Polish ancestry on his father's side, as his father's name was Kazimierz Broda, which was one of the most popular Polish first names at the time. His title was "Turk" because of his strength. Predominantly
Roman-Catholic , Poles gave their young males names of Roman-Catholic saints, such as Kazimierz or Stanisław. Ukrainians, who were Greek Orthodox, would never give their boys these two names - they would rather name them after Greek saints, such as Vasyl, which was the most common Ukrainian name.Awards & Achievements
