Jacobo Majluta Azar was born in Santo Domingo de Guzman, on 9 October 1934. A politician from Dominican Republic,he was vice president in the government of President Antonio Guzmán and became president, for 43 days, with the suicide of President Guzmán.

He joined the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) in 1961, assuming leadership positions in the party. After being elected senator,he served as chairman of the Upper House from 1982 until late 1984. After winning the PRD candidacy over Jose Francisco Peña Gomez, Majluta lost the general election for President against Joaquin Balaguer in 1986.

Majluta decided to form his own political organization, the Independent Revolutionary Party (PRI). He died on 2 March, 1996 suffering from lung cancer resulting from his years as a compulsive smoker.
