History

The Iridium Jazz Club was opened in December 1994, and had a goal to "present local artists in an attractive setting." [http://www.iridiumjazzclub.com/history.php History of Iridium Jazz Club] ] In the opening months of its existence, local, unknown jazz groups and solo artists were given the chance to perform in front of an audience, if they let them hear what they could do. Unlike many of New York City's jazz clubs, it has remained open to the present day, with the help of some major renovations to keep up with the number of attendees. There have been many major releases recorded live at Iridium, from artists like Jacky Terrasson, Charlie Haden, Kenny Barron, Benny Carter, The Jazz Messengers, Sweets Edison, and Clark Terry.

Critical response

Critics from numerous places have labeled the club as "the best place to have Jazz and brunch in New York City." One disgruntled customer called a gig by Michael Brecker "awful" and that they "felt like [they were] at a fast-food hamburger joint that happened to have jazz and dim lighting."
