2M Group

The 2M Group is an alliance of 12 local authorities representing 2 million residents living in the vicinity of Heathrow airport near London. It was launched in January 2007 [cite web|url=http://www.wimbledonguardian.co.uk/news/topstories/display.var.1221258.0.environmental_alliance_officially_launched.php|title=Environmental alliance officially launched|work=Wimbledon Guardian|accessdate=2008-01-08|author=Helen Husbands|date=2007-01-27] and is concerned about increased noise and air pollution from increased number of flights from the airport and changes to operating methods.

Issues

The group believes that the Government and the industry overstates the economic benefits of aviations and fails to measure the full environmental costs, that extra flights are in fact likely to lead to more noise [cite web|url=http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23383429-details/'Devastating'+Heathrow+noise+map/article.do|title=Devastating' Heathrow noise map|accessdate=2007-12-27|date=2007-01-29|work=This is London|author=Mark Prigg] , worsening air pollution and increased climate change emissions from aviation at a time that other sectors are expected to reduce theirs.

Of particular concern is a planning application to lift the number of annual movements from 480,000 to possibly as high as 720,000, proposals to restrict relief from runway alternation during the day (planes currently switch runways at 3pm every day), canceling the Cranford agreement (which restricts take offs to the east from the northern runway), a review of "westerly preference" (where planes normally descend from the east), proposals for "mixed mode operation" (where each existing runway is used concurrently for both arrivals and departures) and proposals for the third runway.
