Pema Rigdzin (b.1623) was the 1st
Dzogchen Rinpoche ofTibet and a disciple of theFifth Dalai Lama . In 1684, at the age of 61 years, he stumbled upon the hidden location of Rudam, a sacred valley at which
Guru Padmasambhava visited and blessed with his presence. In coordination with his three main disciples, there in the valley he established the monastery of Dzogchen Rudam Orgyen Samten Chöling, known as theDzogchen Monastery which today lies inSichuan province in China. In the icongraphic representation of Pema Rigdzin herewith, within his right or
upaya -hand he holds the stem of a lotus (Sanskrit:padma (attribute) sprouting from hisheartmind chakra (Tibetan: "khorlo") that functions as adais for theDharma , represented by a book or tomb, which in turn supports the flaming sword of "prajna " (Sankrit) often seen as an attribute ofManjushri . Iconographically, flames denote 'spiritual power' in the HimalayanThangka tradition of theTwilight Language . In the sky above his head reside theSun andMoon in balance,metonym ic of the solar and lunar subtle channels of thesubtle body . Thetriratna is represented by the stylizedtrefoil pattern upon the foundation of thethrone that supports him. The colored objects in the foreground are 'wish-fulfilling jewels' (Sanskrit: "cintamani "). In his left orprajna -hand at the level of theMuladhara (or one of the other three foundation "khorlo") is the 'Urn of Wisdom' (Sanskrit:bumpa ) which is one of theAshtamangala .
