Literary significance and criticism

It has been deemed to be 'a cross between George Washington Cable's "The Grandissimes" (1880) and Anthony Hope's "Prisoner of Zenda" (1894)' [Catherine M. Downs, "Becoming Modern: Willa Cather's Journalism", Susquehanna University Press, 2000, page 83] .
