1677 -October 10 ,1761 ) was Acting Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1723 to 1728.Dummer was born and died in
Newbury, Massachusetts . He marriedCatherine Dudley onApril 26 ,1714 . He was commissioned as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts in 1716. The Governor then wasSamuel Shute , and when he left onJanuary 1 ,1723 , Dummer served as Governor and Commander-in-Chief. In 1728, William Burnet became the Governor, replacing Dummer. When Burnet died, Dummer acted as Governor and Commander-in-Chief again for a short time until 1730, when he retired. At his bequest,the Governor's Academy was opened onFebruary 27 ,1763 , inByfield, Massachusetts . It was first called Dummer Charity School, then Dummer Academy and, most recently, Governor Dummer Academy. On July 1, 2006, the name changed toThe Governor's Academy .ee also
