Lisnaskea was a
county constituency comprising the eastern part ofCounty Fermanagh . It was created in 1929 when theHouse of Commons (Method of Voting and Redistribution of Seats) Act (Northern Ireland) 1929 introducedfirst past the post elections throughout Northern Ireland. Fermanagh South was created by the division of Fermanagh and Tyrone into eight new constituencies, of which three were inCounty Fermanagh . The constituency survived unchanged, returning one member of Parliament, until theNorthern Ireland Parliament wasprorogued in 1972 and formally abolished in 1973. Lisnaskea had an
Ulster Unionist majority, but a substantialIrish Nationalist minority. The seat was consistently won by theUlster Unionist Party candidate, and it was only contested on three occasions: in 1949 by a Nationalist Party candidate, in 1968 byUlster Liberal Party and independent candidates and in 1969 byPeople's Democracy andindependent Unionist candidates.
