VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is a governmental, non-profit research institute. VTT is an important part of the Finnish innovation system under the domain of the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Its objective is to turn high-quality research into practical benefits and thereby improve the competitiveness of industry and business and increase the wellbeing of Finnish society. VTT produces research, development, testing and information services to public sector, companies and international organisations. Its activities are focused on the following areas:
* Information and communication technology, electronics
* Machinery, materials, industrial engineering
* Transport, traffic, logistics
* Biotechnology, food industry, pharmaceuticals
* Pulp&paper, chemistry, environment
* Building, built environment
* Energy
VTT was founded in 1942 for scientific and public utility. In 2007, VTT had a turnover of 217 million euros and employed 2780 people. VTT has its headquarters in Otaniemi, which is close to Helsinki, the capital city of Finland. In addition, VTT has local offices in three other cities: Oulu, Jyväskylä and Tampere. The president and CEO of VTT is Erkki Leppävuori. VTT is an abbreviation of Finnish words "Valtion Teknillinen Tutkimuskeskus" which translate to "governmental technical research centre".
