Marita Covarrubias is a fictional character on the television series "The X-Files". Played by actress Laurie Holden, Marita first appears as Agent Fox Mulder's third informant in the 1996 season four premiere "Herrenvolk". After her initial appearance in the premiere of the show's fourth season, she became a recurring character, appearing across the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth seasons of the show. She lived for a time in New York City, and later moved to Annapolis, Maryland. In later episodes her partnership and relationship with co-conspirator Alex Krycek becomes apparent, a hotly contested relationship among fans Fact|date=February 2007.

As Mulder's Informant

Marita becomes an informant to Mulder after the death of his former source, X. Assistant to one of the Special Representatives of the UN Secretary General, she is a mysterious character with little known background, though it is known Cigarette Smoking Man was her direct superior. She is somewhat more reluctant than previous informants of Mulder, often only offering information when approached by him, however at times her help proved invaluable to Mulder's quest for the truth; a cause she once mentions she supports.

The Syndicate and Experimentation

During the fifth season, The Syndicate discovered that Marita had betrayed them, and was providing information to Mulder. As a result, she was used as a guinea pig for the vaccination that The Syndicate had been developing to fight the black oil after she became infected with it. The tests, having been conducted on Marita for about a year, disfigured her. During the sixth season, a disfigured Marita is spotted by Mulder at a decontimanation facility where Cassandra Spender is being held. A desperate Marita is later discovered by Jeffrey Spender with whom she pleads to help her escape the facility, addressing him by name as well as expressing some knowledge of both himself and his mother - including where the Syndicate intend to take his mother to be presented to the Colonists. However, despite his best efforts; Spender is unable to escort her from the premises. Alex Krycek, also present at the facility, declines help to the pair, and leaves Marita for dead.

Return and Revenge

Later in season 7, she returns, having been restored to normal, presumably in exchange for helping the Cigarette Smoking Man. At his request, she sets off to secure Krycek's release from a foreign prison and informs the newly released Kryceck of the ailing CSM's imminent demise. After the pair return to the USA, CSM informs them of his plans to have the pair reinstate the conspiracy and sends them off to track down a downed alien craft. During this dicussion, Marita expresses fear at the realization of the impending invasion, with CSM correcting her the aliens are only coming back. Marita and Krycek soon come into contact with Mulder and Scully (the latter meeting Marita for the first time) and share information with the pair of agents. Marita and Krycek inevitably turn on the Cigarette Smoking Man, returning to his apartment after failing to track down the craft only for Krycek to push the wheelchair bound CSM down a flight of stairs, with he and Marita stepping over his crumpled body, leaving him for dead.

Defending Mulder

In the series finale, Skinner seeks Marita as his star witness in Mulder's murder trial. After Skinner fails to track her down, a ghostly image of X hands Mulder a scrap of paper with Marita's new address scribbled upon it. She is soon called upon to testify, and speaks about her involvement with the conspiracy to some extent. However, when Skinner pushes for further information, namely about the continuation of the conspiracy, Marita clams up, and at Mulder's request, is dismissed from the witness chair; fearing that if Marita was to divluge certain information, she would be killed because of it.
