Texas International Law Journal

= History and Overview =

The "Texas International Law Journal" is a student-edited law journal at the University of Texas School of Law. The "Journal" is the fourth-oldest student-edited international law journal in the United States. For more than four decades, the "Journal" has earned acclaim and recognition as one of the top international/specialty journals in the nation, and its success reflects the outstanding effort and dedication of more than one hundred student members at the University of Texas School of Law.

The "Journal" was created in the wake of the Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis with the encouragement and support of Professor E. Ernest Goldstein. It published its first issue in January 1965 and has been in continuous publication since. It has achieved one of the largest distributions in its category and continues to attract noted authors, including former United States Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. Over the years, the "Journal" has been cited by courts at all levels, including the Texas Supreme Court.

Additionally, the "Journal" organizes a symposium every year, with preeminent speakers from the United States and around the world. Past symposia have centered around cutting-edge topics in the international forum. Recent titles include: "A Conference on the Military Commissions Act"; "Representing Culture, Translating Human Rights"; "Judicialization and Globalization of the Judiciary"; "Symposium on International Litigation Honoring Russell J. Weintraub"; "International Symposium in Honor of Hans Baade: Teaching and Practicing Law in the 21st Century"; "Energy and International Law: Development, Litigation, and Regulation"; "Human Reproduction and International Law"; and "International Bankruptcy Law: Comparative and Transnational Approaches".

Volume 44

Volume 44 of the "Texas International Law Journal" will publish three issues throughout the course of the 2008–2009 academic year. The latest symposium, entitled "Transport Law for the 21st Century: The New UNCITRAL Convention", was held March 27–28, 2008, and covered issues related to the ratification of the new Convention on the Carriage of Goods by Sea, which will take place January 14–25, 2009, in Vienna. Presentations from the conference provided a rare opportunity for commentary and notes on the articles of the convention from the drafters themselves. In addition, papers published from the conference will serve as one of the primary sources for interpreting and explaining the new convention.

There are, as of May 30, 2008, 118 student members on the "Journal".
