Shihabuddin Bayazid Shah

Shihabuddin Bayazid Shah

Shihabuddin Bayazid Shah (Bangla: শিহাবউদ্দীন বায়েজীদ শাহ) (1413-1414) was a Ilyas dynasty Sultan of Bengal. Before his accession to the throne of Bengal, he was perhaps a slave of Sultan Saifuddin Hamza Shah. On the orders of Raja Ganesha, a landlord of Dinajpur in north-west Bengal, Bayazid Shah revolted and killed Saifuddin Hamza Shah, and ascended the throne. He issued coins in his own name from Firuzabad (Pandua), Mu'azzamabad and Satgaon. Shihab-ud-Din Bayazid Shah continued the friendly relation with the Ming dynasty rulers of China like his predecessors. He exchanged envoys with the emperor of China and sent him horses and local products as presents. Once he sent a giraffe to the Chinese emperor with a letter written on a golden leaf. The animal, unknown in China, aroused great curiosity amongst the people. [Majumdar, R.C. (ed.) (2006). "The Delhi Sultanate", Mumbai: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, p.204] . Raja Ganesha, the landlord of Dinajpur in north-west Bengal, attacked and slew Bayazid Shah and ascended to the throne of Bengal in 1414. After Ganesha usurped the throne Bayazid Shah's son Firuz Shah might have fled from the capital and tried to establish his authority over southern and eastern Bengal. But soon Ganesha defeated and killed Firuz Shah.
