ELAVL4

ELAVL4

ELAV (embryonic lethal, abnormal vision, Drosophila)-like 4 (Hu antigen D), also known as ELAVL4 or HuD, is a human gene.cite web | title = Entrez Gene: ELAVL4 ELAV (embryonic lethal, abnormal vision, Drosophila)-like 4 (Hu antigen D)| url = http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=1996| accessdate = ]

The HuD/ELAVL4 protein is an RNA-binding protein. [cite journal | author=Szabo A, Dalmau J, Manley G, "et al." |title=HuD, a paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis antigen, contains RNA-binding domains and is homologous to Elav and Sex-lethal. |journal=Cell |volume=67 |issue= 2 |pages= 325–33 |year= 1991 |pmid= 1655278 |doi= ]

HuD is expressed only in neurons and it binds to AU-rich element-containing mRNAs. As a result of this interaction the half-life of the transcript is increased. HuD is important in neurons during brain development and plasticity.
