*Taira no Atsumori , a young warrior known for his death in single combat at the hands ofKumagae no Jirô Naozane . He was well known for his skill in the flute.B

Saito Musashibo Benkei , aSohei who servedMinamoto no Yoshitsune . He is known for his immense strength, courage, and loyalty. He held backMinamoto no Yoritomo 's forces while his master committedseppuku .G

Giō , aShirabyoshi dancer who won the heart ofTaira no Kiyomori . After losing his favor toHotoke , she renounced the world and became a nun.
*RetiredEmperor Go-Shirakawa , father of RetiredEmperor Takakura and grandfather ofEmperor Antoku . He strove to maintain power after retiring, but soon realized he was losing his control toTaira no Kiyomori . Though unsuccessful in beatingTaira no Kiyomori in life, he would live to see the eventual downfall of theTaira clan.H

Hotoke , a youngShirabyoshi dancer who took the place of the olderGiō in the eyes ofTaira no Kiyomori . Her name is Japanese for Buddha. After realizing that she too will eventually befall the same fate asGiō , she also becomes a nun.K

Kajiwara Kagetoki , aMinamoto warrior who held a grudge againstMinamoto no Yoshitsune . Through his slander, he eventually convincedMinamoto no Yoritomo to turn against his brotherMinamoto no Yoshitsune .
*Imai no Shirô Kanehira ,close friend ofMinamoto no Yoshinaka and the son of his wet nurse. They would later die together at theBattle of Awazu against the forces ofMinamoto no Noriyori .
*Kenreimon-In ,also known asTaira no Tokuko . Daughter ofTaira no Kiyomori who becomes a consort toEmperor Takakura and gives birth toEmperor Antoku . Became a nun later in life.
*Kiô , loyalMinamoto soldier under the command ofMinamoto no Nakatsuna . Pretends to join theTaira to retrieveMinamoto no Nakatsuna 's prized horse fromTaira no Munemori .
*Taira no Kiyomori , head of theTaira clan at the peak of its power. Established the first samurai-dominated government in Japanese history. He becomes a monk later in life, but even in doing so he does not lose is influence in political manners. His eventual death marked the downfall of theTaira . None of his successors were as accomplished in their leadership abilities.
*Taira no Koremori , son ofTaira no Shigemori .
*Kumagae no Jirô Naozane , known for killing the young warriorTaira no Atsumori at thebattle of Ichi-no-tani . He later shows great remorse for this act and becomes a priest.M

Archbishop Meiun , also known as theTendai abbot. He is exiled by RetiredEmperor Go-Shirakawa as punishment for attacking the capital.Taira no Kiyomori opposed his exile.
*Fujiwara no Motofusa , held the position of Regent, the highest office in the country. He punishes the attendants ofTaira no Kiyomori 's grandson,Taira no Sukemori , for not showing proper respect to an imperial procession.Taira no Kiyomori gets revenge for his grandson by sending men to cut off the hair of Motofusa's attendants. WhenTaira no Shigemori learns of these events, he has all of the men fired.
*Prince Mochihito , son of RetiredEmperor Go-Shirakawa who was passed over byEmperor Takakura for the throne. Through his support of theMinamoto he was responsible for the start of theGenpei War .
*Mongaku , a particularly austere monk. He convincedMinamoto no Yoritomo to leave his exile and rise up against theTaira by bringing him the skull of his father. He also convinced RetiredEmperor Go-Shirakawa to pardonMinamoto no Yoritomo .
*Taira no Munemori , son ofTaira no Kiyomori , and younger brother ofTaira no Shigemori . He became the head of theTaira clan afterTaira no Shigemori 's unexpected death.N

Minamoto no Nakatsuna , elder son ofMinamoto no Yorimasa . Was forced to give his prized horse toTaira no Munemori . This horse was later retrieved by one of his loyal soldiers,Kiô .
*Fujiwara no Narichika , father ofFujiwara no Naristune . He was first exiled, and then executed by theTaira for his participation in theShishigatani Incident .
*Fujiwara no Naritsune , son ofFujiwara no Narichika and conspirator in theShishigatani Incident . He was exiled toKikai-ga-shima , but was later granted amnesty for the sake of the unbornEmperor Antoku .
*Emperor Nijo , abdicates the throne to his particularly young sonEmperor Rokujo , who was two. Caused a conflict with his father, RetiredEmperor Go-Shirakawa , when he forced a former Senior Grand Empress to become his consort. The ceremonies at his funeral caused a conflict between theEnryakuji monks and theMiidera monks.
*Taira no Norimori , younger brother ofTaira no Kiyomori and father-in-law ofFujiwara no Naristune . He successfully pleads withTaira no Kiyomori to spareFujiwara no Naristune 's life.R

Emperor Rokujo , child emperor who was the son ofEmperor Nijo . He took the throne at the age of two. He soon abdicated and theTaira 's choice,Emperor Takakura , took his place.*
Saiko , a close confidant to RetiredEmperor Go-Shirakawa who was largely responsibly for theShishigatani Incident . He was executed byTaira no Kiyomori .
*Sanemori , aTaira warrior who stays behind to fight theMinamoto even after most of his comrades have left. It is later revealed he is actually over 70 and died his hair to avoid pity from the enemy.
*Fujiwara no Sanesada , was passed over (by aTaira ) on an imperial appointment he expected to receive. UnlikeFujiwara no Narichika , instead of rebelling, he chose to win the appointment by gaining favor withTaira no Kiyomori by honoring the shrine of theTaira clan.
*Shunkan , a monk who took part in theShishigatani Incident to overthrowTaira no Kiyomori . After this plot failed, he was exiled, alone withTaira no Yasuyori andFujiwara no Naritsune , toKikai-ga-shima . Later whenTaira no Tokuko was having birthing problems,Taira no Kiyomori grantedTaira no Yasuyori andFujiwara no Naritsune amnesty, but did no pardonShunkan . He eventually committed suicide by ceasing to consume food.
*Taira no Shigehara , son ofTaira no Kiyomori and younger brother ofTaira no Shigemori . He is the only one ofTaira no Kiyomori 's sons to be captured alive. He takesBuddhist vows before being executed.
*Taira no Shigemori , son and heir ofTaira no Kiyomori . He often took the role of the voice of reason with his advice to his father, and was not afraid to disagree with him. He died of a mysterious illness and his loss was a striking blow to theTaira clan - no other clan head was nearly as capable asTaira no Shigemori .
*Taira no Sukemori , son ofTaira no Shigemori , and grandson ofTaira no Kiyomori . He was chastised and whipped byFujiwara no Motofusa for not showing proper respect during an imperial procession. This act angeredTaira no Kiyomori and he retaliated on his grandson's behalf. His father,Taira no Shigemori , on the other hand, felt his son was at fault and disagreed with his father.T

*RetiredEmperor Toba , an influential force after abdicating the throne. His support ofEmperor Go-Shirakawa againstEmperor Sutoku lead to theHogen Disturbance .
*Taira no Tokuko , also known asKenreimon-In . Daughter ofTaira no Kiyomori , and mother ofEmperor Antoku . She was the last ImperialHeike survivor at thebattle of Dan-no-ura .
*Tomoe Gozen , female samurai who fought forMinamoto . She was one ofMinamoto no Yoshinaka 's most highly skilled warriors.Y

Taira no Yasuyori , conspirator in theShishigatani Incident . He was exiled toKikai-ga-shima , but was later granted amnesty for the sake of the unbornEmperor Antoku .
*Nasu no Yoichi , a highly skilled archer who fought for theMinamoto during theGenpei war . At theBattle of Yashima , he is lauded for hitting a fan from a very far distance, answering aTaira challenge.
*Minamoto no Yorimasa , supportedPrince Mochihito 's bid for the Imperial Throne. Sent out a call to otherMinamoto leaders in his struggle to fight theTaira .
*Minamoto no Yoritomo , also known as the Kamakura Lord. The mainMinamoto general and half-brother toMinamoto no Yoshitsune andMinamoto no Noriyori . He was exiled, rather than killed by theTaira after theHeiji Disturbance . He is responsible for establishing the firstShogunate .
*Minamoto no Yoshinaka , also known as Kiso no Kanja Yoshinaka. AMinamoto leader who is cousin toMinamoto no Yoritomo . He determines to fight against theTaira from his position in the West. He is later defeated byMinamoto no Yoshitsune at the decree of RetiredEmperor Go-Shirakawa .
*Minamoto no Yoshitsune , also known as Kurô Tayû no Hôgan Yoshitsune. Half-brother toMinamoto no Yoritomo andMinamoto no Noriyori . He led theMinamoto forces during many of the decisive battles against theTaira .
*Minamoto no Yukiie , uncle toMinamoto no Yoshinaka ,Minamoto no Yoritomo ,Minamoto no Yoshitsune , andMinamoto no Noriyori . Initially fought alongsideMinamoto no Yoshinaka but later betrayed him forMinamoto no Yoritomo .External links
