rugby union atIona College in Brisbane, where in 2005 playing in the colleges 1st XV, he was selected for theAssociated Independent Colleges side to compete in the Queensland School Boys trails. After his final year at college, Tyrell joined with Brisbane rugby league side theEasts Tigers in 2006. He started the year playing junior Colts and made his mark with a swag of tries in the first few matches. After a season ending injury toQueensland Cup winger Steve Beattie he was moved into the first grade side where he performed strongly. His strong first year playing competitive rugby league was recognised as he was awarded the prestigious Peter Gallagher Memorial Award for the most outstanding young player in the South-East Division. Many critics believe that with further hardwork and development he should make his NRL debut during the 2008 season.
