Its seat is the town of Strzegom, which lies approximately convert|15|km|mi|0 north-west of Świdnica, and convert|52|km|mi|0 west of the regional capital Wrocław.

The gmina covers an area of convert|144.71|km2|sqmi|1, and as of 2006 its total population is 26,990 (out of which the population of Strzegom amounts to 16,782, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 10,208).

Gmina Strzegom is bordered by the town of Świebodzice and the gminas of Dobromierz, Jaworzyna Śląska, Mściwojów, Udanin and Żarów.
