Hugh Smith (died
December 16 ,2007 ) was a news anchor atWTVT inTampa, Florida from 1963 to 1991. In that time, he anchored the 6:00 pm news and doubled as the station's news director. He left the station after an arrest for soliciting a prostitute, his second arrest of that nature. He died on December 16, 2007 from complications frommelanoma .Early life
Smith was born in
Madison, South Dakota and grew up in the small town ofPipestone, Minnesota developed an interest in radio by listening to broadcastersEdward R. Murrow ,Eric Sevareid ,Douglas Edwards , andRobert Trout . He later went to college at theUniversity of Minnesota and graduated in 1956. He was editor-in-chief of the Minnesota Daily, student newspaper, during the 1955-56 academic year.Broadcasting career
Smith's broadcast career started as staff writer for
WCCO-AM in Minneapolis. He later went to work at WHAS AM/TV, and later went to work at KVTV inSioux City, Iowa before coming to WTVT in 1963. He died inSt. Petersburg, Florida .External links
