Penn Kemble (
21 January 1941 -15 October 2005 ) was an Americanpolitical activist .Born in
Worcester, Massachusetts , Kemble grew up inLancaster, Pennsylvania . He studied at the University of Colorado, where he helped set up a local branch of theYoung People's Socialist League . Socialist Party of America , and attempted to set up a youth wing. He was also a founder ofNegotiation Now! , which called for a negotiated end to theVietnam War , and was active in theCongress of Racial Equality .In 1972, Kemble was a founder of the
Social Democrats, USA , and also of theCoalition for a Democratic Majority ." Fiercely opposed to theSoviet Union and tonuclear disarmament , he helped found theInstitute on Religion and Democracy and from 1981 until 1988 was the president ofProdemca , which opposed theSandanista s and related groups inCentral America .In 1991, Kemble was appointed to the
Board for International Broadcasting and soon became theWashington, D.C. representative ofFreedom House . However, as a supporter of the Democratic Party, he refused to accept any office underGeorge W. Bush .References
