The Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) is a laboratory of the Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) of India. Located in Bangalore, its primary function is development and evaluation of airborne electronic systems for military applications.

History

CABS was set up in 1991 to lead the Airborne Surveillance Platform (Airawat) project. Its task was to develop airborne electronic systems on a flying platform for early warning, command and control functions. [ [http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/india/asp.htm Airborne Surveillance Platform] ] The program was carried on until 1999 when the flying platform HS 748 crashed in Tamil nadu killing all the eight people onboard. Present Areas of work

The AEW Project codenamed "Airawat" was revived in 2005 and the new system will be based on Embraer EMB-145 with an active phased array radar, satellite communications, IFF, SIGNIT and COMINT Sensors.

The center is also responsible for testing HAL Tejas avionics on an HS 748 testbed.
