Walker was a
platoon leader with the 95th Infantry Division during World War II and earned theSilver Star for braving enemy fire during the Battle ofMetz inFrance . He also fought in theBattle of the Bulge and theRhineland Campaign and was awarded the Bronze Star. During the Korean War he served in theFar East Command liaison group inJapan .After returning to the United States, Walker served as the assistant
adjutant general for theMississippi National Guard from 1972 to 1976. He was subsequently appointed chief of theNational Guard Bureau under President Reagan in 1982, where he served until 1986.ee also
