Laurence Fogerty

Laurence Fogerty

Laurence Clifford Fogerty (born 1 October, 1950 in Morpeth, Northumberland) is a British former distance runner, from Morpeth.

Fogerty's career started when he ran with his local Morpeth Harriers running 3 miles in 15 minutes as a youth and setting a new record for a youth at The Championship Course (just over 4 miles) in Northumberland of 20 minutes 34 seconds in 1966.

This led him to be selected to run for Northumberland & Durham, and then England.

He was taken under the wing of Scottish athlete Jim Alder who became his training partner. Alder later talked about and commended Fogerty in his biography "Marathon and Chips"

Fogerty competed in a Tour Event in the The Netherlands in 1966. In Amsterdam he won the 400m, 800m and 1500m. Later Fogerty travelled to Rotterdam, to compete in the Men's 1500m finishing 3rd (as a youth at the age of 15).

The UK and Ireland Championships followed in 1967 where Fogerty finished 4th in the Men's 4 mile race.

He was seen a major prospect by UK athletics, however a knee injury, suffered while training, cut Fogerty's athletics career short.
