William Norwood Still, Jr. (born in
Columbus, Mississippi on 25 September 1932), is an American maritime historian, who was the first director of the program inmaritime history atEast Carolina University and a noted author of works on Civil War history and U.S. naval history.Early Life and Education
The son of William Norwood Still and his wife Helen Morris Still, William "Bill" Still attended
Mississippi College , where he earned hisbachelor of arts degree in 1953. On 4 June 1953, he married Mildrid Boling, with whom he later had four children.After serving in the
United States Navy in 1954-56, Still went on to theUniversity of Alabama , where he earned his master of arts degree in 1958 with a thesis on "The history of theCSS Arkansas " and hisPh.D. in 1964 with a dissertation on "The construction and fitting out of ironclad vessels-of-war within the Confederacy", completed under the supervision of ProfessorRobert Erwin Johnson .Academic career
Mississippi University for Women gave Still his first academic appointment in 1959, when he was appointed an instructor and later an assistant professor of history. In 1968,East Carolina University appointed him associate professor of history and later full professor. In 1982, he became the founding director of ECU's Program inMaritime history andUnderwater archaeology . Following his retirement and move in 1994 to his retirement residence inKailua, Hawaii , theUniversity of Hawaii appointed him as adjunct researcher in 1995.A leading figure in the academic field of maritime history, the
North American Society for Oceanic History (NASOH) awarded Still itsK. Jack Bauer Award in 1988. Subsequently, Still became an active leader ofNASOH , serving as vice president in 1988-1992 and president, 1992-94. In addition, Still served on the advisory council of theSociety of Civil War Historians , 1987-1997 and on the editorial advisory board of "TheAmerican Neptune " from 1984 to 2002,Civil Wars Times Illustrated from 1994, and theSecretary of the Navy's Advisory Subcommittee on Naval History .In 1989-90, Still occupied the Secretary of the Navy Research Chair in Naval History at the
Naval Historical Center . In addition, he served on the advisory board of theNational Maritime Alliance and theUnited States Commission on Military History .Awards
