EvelynSet The Tone were a Scottish Electronic Dance group formed by
Kenny Hyslop , Bobby Paterson,Chris Morgan and Evelyn. Background
Kenny Hyslop had been a former member of a number of Scottish bands includingThe Zones ,The Skids andSlik . In 1981 he joinedSimple Minds but his time with them was brief, although he is known to have played drums on their hit single "Promised You A Miracle", which reached number 13 in the UK Charts in April 1982. Following his departure fromSimple Minds , Hyslop got together with Bobby Paterson, Chris Morgan and Evelyn Asiedu to form Set The Tone.Set The Tone quickly managed to secure a record deal with
Island Records and, late in 1982, their first single "Dance Sucker " (b/w "Dance Sucker" remixed byFrancois Kevorkian ) [ [http://www.discogs.com/artist/Set+The+Tone Set The Tone ] ] was released. Despite getting significant airplay in the clubs ofGlasgow , this single didn't make a strong impression on the UK charts peaking at number 62 [ [http://www.chartstats.com/artistinfo.php?id=3700 Chart Stats - Set The Tone ] ] in January 1983.Their second single, "
Rap Your Love " (b/w "Surprise Your Love") was released in 1983, again to a less than rapturous response, peaking at number 67 in the UK charts in March 1983.Around this time, the album "
Shiftin Air Affair " was released but had little impact. In the meantime, Paterson left and was replaced by
Kendal Stubbs , a sound engineer fromThe Bahamas who had previously worked withKool And The Gang and theTom Tom Club .Shortly afterwards
Island Records dropped Set The Tone, deciding that they were apparently too far ahead of their time.Following the demise of Set The Tone,
Kenny Hyslop formed theOne O'Clock Gang who released an album onArista Records , again without significant commercial success. He went on to be credited on a number of singles and albums, including some byMidge Ure . However, after becoming disillusioned with the music industry, Hyslop became an alternativeDJ until leaving theUK forCanada with blues bandBig George And The Business . After returning to theUK Hyslop started teaching drumming atCarlton Studios inGlasgow as well as producing new music published throughMySpace .Bobby Paterson became part of
