- Bernardo Sandals
Bernardo Sandals was founded in 1946 by architect
Bernard Rudofsky andBertha Rudofsky using designs Bertha taught atBlack Mountain College and the humane and sensible approach to the human foot that Bernard illustrated in his "Are Clothes Modern?" exhibition at theMuseum of Modern Art inNew York City two years earlier. The first collection was presented at the
Ritz Carlton Hotel inManhattan , and featured only 6 designs. All six designs consisted of strappy uppers on an asymmetrical leather sole that was pancake flat. The collection was almost immediately successful, and in the 1950s and 1960s high-end fashion magazines such as "Vogue" and "Harper's Bazaar " regularly featured Bernardo sandals in fashion editorials. The shoes were produced inItaly , and the company has been sold several times, before being bought by a small group of investors in 2000 and is again produced in Italy. The line is currently designed by
Dennis Comeau who lives and works inFlorence, Italy . The current Bernardo sandal line includes several of Rudofsky's original designs.
