"One Man Band", released in November 2007, is James Taylor's first live album in thirteen years, recorded over several days at Taylor's eponymous concert at the Colonial Theatre in his hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The songs chosen for the album span over five decades. The premise for "One Man Band" is that instead of having a wide array of instruments, as with most concerts, Taylor is accompanied by only his guitar and Larry Goldings on piano, so the songs are heard much like they were played in the very beginning of his career. There are some exceptions to this concept, as a drum machine, made by friend Morton Fairfield, is featured for two songs, and also the pre-recorded Tanglewood Festival Chorus accompanies Taylor on two songs.
