Greeley Center, often shortened to simply Greeley, is a village in and the county seat of Greeley County, Nebraska, United States.GR|6 The population was 531 at the 2000 census. Greeley is the county seat of Greeley County.

Geography

Greeley is located at coor dms|41|32|53|N|98|31|51|W|city (41.548099, -98.530862)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 527 people, 213 households, and 128 families residing in the village. The population density was 844.5 people per square mile (325.4/km²). There were 238 housing units at an average density of 378.5/sq mi (145.9/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.06% White, 0.19% African American, 0.38% Asian, 0.19% from other races, and 0.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.19% of the population. Greeley has one of the highest percentages of Irish-American residents (43%) of any town or city with a population of over 500 in the United States. The town was part of the Irish Catholic Colonization effort of Bishop O'Connor of New York in the 1880's.

There were 213 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.4% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.9% were non-families. 39.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.16.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.7% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 20.9% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 25.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $31,667, and the median income for a family was $43,036. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,875 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,791. About 6.4% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.8% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.
