Arnold Hardy

Arnold Hardy (February 2, 1922 – December 5 2007) was an American amateur photographer who won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Photography.

His 1947 award-winning photo of a woman plunging from a window of the burning Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia on December 7 1946, became the defining image of the fire that killed 119 people. At the time, Hardy was 24 years old and a graduate student at Georgia Tech.cite web |url=http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/251/story/194225.html|title=Amateur who took Pulitzer-winning Winecoff fire photo dies|accessdate=2007-12-07 |author=|date= |work= |publisher=Ledger-Enquirer.com] cite news |title=Pulitzer Winner for 1946 Fire Photo Dies |url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/07/AR2007120701691.html |publisher=Associated Press via WashingtonPost.com |date=2007-12-07 |accessdate=2007-12-11 ]

Hardy later declined a job with the Associated Press, and instead began an x-ray equipment business. He died at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta of complications following hip surgery.
