Falls the Shadow (Sharon Kay Penman)
- Falls the Shadow (Sharon Kay Penman)
"Falls the Shadow" is a historical novel by Sharon Penman, first published in 1988. It is the second in her trilogy of novels about the last native princes of Wales. The first in the trilogy is "Here Be Dragons", the third book being "The Reckoning".
Plot
Much of the story is concerned with Simon de Montfort, the French nobleman who marries Eleanor, sister of King Henry III of England. De Montfort's rise to power is told in parallel with the activities of the rulers of Wales, Llywelyn the Great (whose death occurs early in the book), his short-lived successor, Dafydd ap Llywelyn, and finally Llywelyn the Last, who forms an alliance with de Montfort, shortly before the latter's downfall and death.
