- Alexander Conze
Alexander Christian Leopold Conze (
December 10 ,1831 -July 19 ,1914 ) was a Germanarchaeologist who specialized in ancient Greek art. He was a native ofHannover , and studied at theUniversity of Göttingen . In 1863 he became a professor at theUniversity of Halle , and from 1869 to 1877 worked at theUniversity of Vienna , where he established the department of archaeology andepigraphy . Beginning in 1873, he focused his efforts towards the excavation atSamothrace .From 1877 until 1887 Conze was director of antique sculpture at the Berlin Museum, and in 1887 become secretary of the German Archaeological Institute. Carl Humann (1839-1896), he began excavation atPergamon inAsia Minor . This project lasted until 1886, and withWilhelm Dörpfeld (1853-1940) he started a second archaeological dig at Pergamon in 1900. At Pergamon, Conze and Humann uncovered one of the greatest archaeological treasures ofHellenistic civilization , thePergamon Altar , which today is housed at thePergamon Museum inBerlin .Selected writings
