- Atlas Terrier
The Atlas Terrier is a breed of
terrier that faces potential extinction due to the popularity of a closely-related breed, theJack Russell Terrier . The Atlas Terrier is very similar to a Jack Russell Terrier, but in different colours.Breed qualities
The Atlas Terrier is athletic, quick-thinking, strong-witted and built for earthwork. The ideal Atlas chest is shallow, flexible and "sleevelike" in appearance. The ideal Atlas coat is double and weather-resistant. Other than these features, the Atlas can be bred to suit the desires of its owner, as areas and working needs vary from place to place and country to country. This terrier is never to be impeded by a rigid standard that will compromise a hunter from producing healthy, workable and sound-minded terriers.
Questions regarding breed standards
The
Jack Russell Terrier Club of America began registering Jack Russell Terriers in 1976, and in the beginning they registered both short-legged (commonly called "Puddin's" or "Russell Terriers") and long-legged dogs (currently called "Parson type"). Since that time the JRTCA has become more stringent in its definition of the ideally-structured terrier. The JRTCA will still register dogs from solid-coloured parents, as long as the dog fits their standard, but they will not recognize the dog's parents as Jack Russell Terriers. There are some questions regarding this practice; the standard for the Jack Russell Terrier was written many years after the death of Parson Jack Russell, for whom the JRT was named. Parson Russell did prefer a white (PIED) coloured dog, but it was not his main concern; working style was. The Parson kept many terriers, including solid-coloured ones. Pricked ears and undocked tails were also a trademark of Parson Russell's dogs.Other working breeds are the Patterdale Terrier and the Fell Terrier; the primary difference is that the
Patterdale andFell did not come from white-bodied Fox Terrier type dogs. Instead they developed fromLakeland Terrier s,Welsh Terrier s andStaffordshire Bull Terrier s.ee also
