Dhahar is a district in the Sanaag region, a territory disputed by the Puntland and Somaliland administrative regions of Somalia. In July 2007, the district became part of the Maakhir autonomous region of Somalia.The city has grown since the civil war in Somalia, and it now counts one hospital, two secondary schools, with a new medical school in the planning stages. Dhahar consists of three main neighbourhoods: New Dhahar, the Old Dhahar and Caaqiba .
History of Dhahar
The city caries the name of late Akil Dhahar of Warsangeli who was the ruler of Eastern Sanaag and part of Bari region on behalf of Warsangeli Sultan. In honor of his accomplishments Akil Dhahar's name bears not ephemerally but eternally on the great valley and mountains of the city.
Though there are insufficient writings available on Akil Dhahar, from oral tradition, he was said to have fought against the Abyssinians and uprooted Christian communities in Galgala, a town that used to have churches and temples. The edifices are still present as historical landmarks.
Visit Dhahar
If visiting Dhahar the best period to visit this city is during September-May during the rain season as the heat in the summer is very unbearable for outsiders. In the outskirts of the city you find Sunaari Horses, grassland with wildlife and unique trees a panoramic view.
