Szendrő was first mentioned in
1317 . It was named after its owner Szend. Odly enough, Szendro is a Hungarian last name. The first stone-builtcastle of the county was built here, and it was an important border fortress during the Turkish occupation of Hungary, but PrinceFrancis II Rákóczi had it destroyed in1707 .Szendrő was capital of the
comitatus between1613 and1660 , and centre of the Szendrő district between1615 and1930 . Therailway line of the Bódva valley (built in1896 ) strengthened its role as a market town.Szendrő got town status in
