Sanford J. "Sandy" Ungar (born
1945 ) is an American journalist, author, and current president ofGoucher College inBaltimore, Maryland .Ungar earned a bachelor's degree in government from
Harvard University and a master's degree from theLondon School of Economics . He has been a correspondent forUnited Press International ,Newsweek ,The Washington Post , andThe Economist . He served as Washington editor ofThe Atlantic and managing editor ofForeign Affairs . From1979 -82 , he was a host ofAll Things Considered onNational Public Radio . From1999 -2001 , he was Director ofVoice of America . He became President of Goucher College onJuly 1 ,2001 .Since becoming President of Goucher College, he has raised the college's profile program. When he arrived, Goucher was ranked number 91 among liberal arts colleges. However, the school's ranking has recently dropped to number 111. The College's low standing in the rankings stems from the fact that less than half the classes are taught by tenure-track faculty. In addition to strengthening the faculty, he has implemented a bold international studies program, under the guidance of Marc Roy, the interim director of international studies.
In addition to serving as president of Goucher College, Ungar teaches a freshman liberal arts Free Speech seminar with Dr.
Kaushik Bagchi .Ungar is a strong advocate of free speech and investigative journalism. He is an outspoken advocate of Judith Miller. Steadfastly supporting the New York Times journalist, he called her an American Hero.
Ungar is the author of six books, including "The Papers & The Papers: An Account of the Legal and Political Battle over the Pentagon Papers", which won the George Polk Award in 1973, and "Fresh Blood: The New American Immigrants" (
