Michael Atchia is an academic and a pioneering specialist in the field of Sustainable Development As the former Chief and Programme Director with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) his international career reflects significant contributions in the fields of Educational Reform, International and Regional Environmental Project Management and Conflict Resolution, Environmental Education and Curriculum Development. As International Consultant he has undertaken numerous consultancies in more than 50 countries and has worked with organizations such as UNESCO, World Health Organization, UNDP, ILO, GTZ/DSE of Germany and the British Council.

Educational Qualifications
Michael Atchia obtained his first B.Sc. degree in 1961 in Calcutta, India with distinctions in Zoology and Botany and his second B.Sc. degree in 1963 in London. The same year (1963) he obtained his teacher qualification with the Ministry of Science Education, United Kingdom as well as post-graduate Certificates in Microbiology from Chelsea College of Science and Technology in London.
His Masters degree (M.Sc.) was obtained in 1972 from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom in the subject of Environmental Resources and his Doctorate degree (Ph.D) was obtained from the same University in 1978 with his thesis focusing on Concepts in Environmental Education.

In 1990 he received the "Tree of Learning Award" of the IUCN for 20 years significant contribution to conservation education and in 1996 the "Environmental Leadership Award" from the East African Environment Network[1].
