Walter Laws Smith is an American mathematician, known for his contributions to applied
probability theory .Smith received his
B.Sc. inmathematics (1947) fromUniversity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill . He then moved toEngland to earn anM.Sc. (1951) andPh.D. (1953) fromUniversity of Cambridge . His dissertation was entitled "Stochastic Sequences of Events" advised byHenry Daniels and
D. R. Cox, with whom he published the book "Queues" (1961) and also published with in his early years.
