Alexius is the latinized form of the given name Alexios ( _el. Αλέξιος, polytonic polytonic|Ἀλέξιος, "defender", cf. Alexander), especially common in the later Byzantine Empire. Variants include Alexis and the Russian derivative Aleksey. The female form is Alexia ( _el. Αλεξία).
