"Farthing" is a science fiction novel written by Jo Walton and published by Tor Books in August, 2006.

Plot summary

The book is a "cozy" or "country house" mystery set inside an alternate history in which the United Kingdom made peace with Nazi Germany (against Winston Churchill's wishes) in 1941. [page 111] Set in 1949 [ [http://www.zorinth.net/bluejo/books/farthing/farfaq.htm The Prize in the Game FAQ ] ] , it revolves around the murder of Sir James Thirkie, architect of the "Farthing Peace." The narrative alternates between the perspectives of Lucy Kahn, daughter of the proprietors of the Farthing estate, and Scotland Yard Inspector Peter Carmichael, the police officer assigned to the case.

A sequel, "Ha'penny", was released in October 2007 by Tor Books. A third novel in the series, "Half a Crown", is set to come out in August 2008, also from Tor.

The "Farthing set" that the story revolves around has been compared to the real-life Cliveden set. [http://www.boingboing.net/2006/06/20/farthing-heartrendin.html Farthing: Heart-rending alternate history about British-Reich peace - Boing Boing ] ]
