TV Brasil is a non-profit public broadcasting television channel in Brazil launched on December 2, 2007 at noon. Although TV Cultura was the first public broadcasting channel launched in the country, TV Brasil is the first such, launched by the federal government.

History

TV Brasil was created through a decree of the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação published in October 25, 2007 in the "Diário Oficial da União", Brazil's official gazette. It originated from the fusion of the Empresa Brasileira de Comunicação - Radiobrás and the Associação de Comunicação Educativa Roquette Pinto, responsible for the now defunct TVE Brasil - which was replaced by TV Brasil [ [http://www.agenciabrasil.gov.br/noticias/2007/10/25/materia.2007-10-25.4820775023/view "Decreto oficializa a criação da Empresa Brasil de Comunicação" ("Decree oficializes the creation of the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação"] . Isabela Vieira. Agência Brasil. October 25, 2007. Retrieved December 1, 2007.] .

The lack of equipment restricted TV Brasil's launching to only three cities Rio de Janeiro, Brasília and São Luís. Its programming is, however, also available through its official website [ [http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/brasil/ult96u350230.shtml "Falta de transmissores restringe lançamento da TV Brasil a Rio, Brasília e São Luís" ("Lack of equipment restricts launching to Rio, Brasília and São Luís")] . Regiane Soares. "Folha de S. Paulo". November 30, 2007. Retrieved December 1, 2007.] .

Programming

In its first months, the stations of TV Brasil broadcast four hours a day of regional programing. It also broadcast Brazilian films and programs made by other public television channels. The programming of is divided into five streams: children, animation, audio-visual, citizenship and sports.

Franklin Martins, the national secretary of social communication, has commented that TV Brasil's programming is not yet fully prepared and may suffer from late changes. Martins also said he wished to use public opinion polls to determine programming.
