Early life

Born [Born and baptised "Fiennes Wykeham-Martin", name chaqnged to Cornwallis 15 October 1859]
1 November 1831 at Leeds Castle, Kent, England. Son of Charles Wykeham-Martin M.P. [ 11 September 1801 – 30 October 1870 ] and Lady Jemima Isabella (née Mann) [ 25 December 1806 – 17 December 1836 ] and was educated at Eton College. [ Old Etonians born in 1830's ]

Family life

Major Cornwallis, Married Harriet Elizabeth (née Mott), daughter of John Thomas Mott on 29 July 1863 and had 4 children. [Children were:-
* Fiennes Stanley Wykeham Cornwallis 1864– 1935.
* Arthur Wykeham Cornwallis 1865– 1952.
* Helen Florence Cornwallis 1867– 1957.
* Caroline Vere Cornwallis 1868– 1909.
] The eldest became 1st Baron Cornwallis.

Military career

Served in the Crimean War with the 4th Light Dragoons [ With the following ranks
*Cornet 12 April 1850
*Lieutenant 26 October 1854
*Captain 31 August 1855
*Major 17 July 1860
] and took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade [ Battle of Balaclava, 25 October 1854] , becoming aide-de-camp to Lord George Paget in the Crimea. [Letters Written from The Crimea to Several Members of his Family. CORNWALLIS, (Major Fiennes).

Later life

Retired from the Army on 5 May 1863 with the rank of "Major" and died few years later on 24 April 1867 in a Hunting Accident .
