- Carmel High School (Carmel, California)
Carmel High School is a school of 750 students and 50-plus faculty members, situated just outside of the city of
Carmel, California . Built in 1940, CHS is known for its lovely view of theSanta Lucia Mountains with a peek ofPoint Lobos and thePacific Ocean . It also is known for being one of the most affluent school districts in California, due to a law regarding the high value of local property taxes allowing the school to opt out of ADA (average daily attendance) funding.Carmel High shares a cross town rivalry with
Pacific Grove High School , where every year the two teams compete in The Shoe Game for a shoe that was bronzed and made into a trophy by Carmel High students in an attempt to start the rivalry. The school's mascot is the Padre which pays homage to the peninsula's history with the Spanish missionaries, and the Carmel Mission found just a few miles from Carmel High School. The Carmel High School Library has about 16,000 volumes and is equipped with wireless communication. Currently, a new computer lab and library is under construction. The old library, that at one point was a theater, remains open while the new library is under construction. When the construction is complete, the old library will be torn down and a theater will be built in its place. This theater will be an attempt to use "green" construction practices, such as solar panels and energy efficient lights and appliances.
Construction recently finished on a completely new weight room, dance room, and remodeled gym and locker rooms. The school is known for their golf, with a home course of Pebble Beach, cross country, and track and field teams. The success of their cross country and track and field programs is directly related to Coach Ables, who has trained the cross country team to State skill level for the past 40 years that he has coached for Carmel High School.
The School has a team that participates in the
FIRST Robotics Competition as of 2006: The Team 2035 AKA The Robo-Rockin' Bots, which is headed by teachers Paul McFarlin, Colin Matheson, and Tom Clifford, had a highly successful rookie year and placed second in the U.C. Davis Regional Competition. Their team mascot is a "Rocking Robot", portrayed in their logo as a robotic version of theAC/DC guitaristAngus Young .The current principal is Karl Pallastrini, a Carmel High graduate. He is one of many faculty that were once students at Carmel High School and have returned as staff members.
