Masjid al-Hisn

Masjid al-Hisn

Masjid al-Hisn (Arabic: مسجد الحصن‎) ("The Fortress Mosque") was built between 717 to 720CE by the Umayyad caliph Umar II, after he decided that Mopsuestia in the present Turkey provided a key city to stop a potential Greek attack against Antioch.[1]

A cistern within the structure was inscribed with Umar's full name, Umar ibn-'Abd-al-'Aziz.[1]

The building fell into ruin during the reign of Al-Mu'tasim, approximately 120 years later.[1]
