The "République" class was a type of two pre-"Dreadnought" ironclads of the French Navy.
The "République" marked a significant evolution in the design of French ironclads, with less significant tumble-home than her predecessors, better sailing qualities, larger size and more firepower. The launch of HMS "Dreadnought" rendered the class obsolete, yet the ships served during the First World War.
The design was further improved with the closely related "Liberté" class battleship.
