William T. Minor

William T. Minor (October 3, 1815 - October 13, 1889) was an American politician and a former Governor of Connecticut.

Early life

Minor was born in Stamford, Connecticut on October 3, 1815. He studied at Yale University and graduated in 1834. He then studied law. In 1840, Minor was admitted to the bar.

Politics

Minor became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1841. He held that position until 1849. He became a member of the Connecticut State Senate in 1854.

Minor became the Governor of Connecticut in 1855. He was re-elected to a second term in 1856. Minor was a supporter of lengthening the period of residency before naturalization. He also supported the dismissal of six military companies that consisted mostly of Irishmen. This step further enraged immigrants. A legislation was passed that deprived suffrage to men unable to read the state constitution. He left office on May 6, 1857.

Later years

After completing his term, Minor practiced law. In 1864 he was appointed the consul-general to Havana. He held that position until 1867. He was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1868. In 1868, he was appointed judge of the Superior Court. He held that position until 1873. He passed away on October 13, 1889.
