Duluth, Minnesota , and the most recent former mayor of that city. He lost his bid for re-election in a crowded 12-candidate primary in September 2007.Bergson was elected mayor of Duluth in 2003, taking a two-way race with 57 percent of the vote over local businessman Charlie Bell. He succeeded
Gary Doty , who retired from the office after serving three terms. Bergson had also run unsuccessfully for the office in 1999, and went on to win a seat on theDuluth City Council .Bergson is the only mayor of Duluth to have also served two terms as mayor of
Superior, Wisconsin , Duluth'sTwin Ports sister city acrossLake Superior . He had been a police patrolman when he unseated the incumbent mayor in Superior in the late 1980s. After leaving that office, Bergson returned to active duty and served as apolice detective in Superior.ee also
