Gustav Rose (
March 18 ,1798 -July 15 ,1873 ) was a Germanmineralogist who was a native ofBerlin . He was a graduate of theUniversity of Berlin , where he later became a professor ofmineralogy . In 1856 he became director of the Royal Mineralogical Museum inBerlin , and from 1863 until his death he was president of the German Geological Society. He was a brother of mineralogistHeinrich Rose (1795-1864), the son ofpharmacologist Valentin Rose (1762-1807), and the father of notedsurgeon Edmund Rose (1836-1914).Gustav Rose made several important contributions in the study of
crystallography andpetrography . He is remembered for his research ofmeteorites and his investigations ofchondrule s. WithGustav Tschermak von Seysenegg (1836-1927) andAristides Brezina (1848-1909), the "Rose-Tschermak-Brezina classification" system of meteorites is derived. In 1829 withAlexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) andChristian Gottfried Ehrenberg (1795-1876), he took part in a scientific expedition throughoutImperial Russia , where he performed mineralogical studies in the Altai andUral Mountains , as well as in the region of theCaspian Sea .A rose-colored mineral named
roselite is named after him, and he is credited with the discovery ofperovskite , which is named in honor of Russian mineralogistLev Aleksevich von Perovski (1792-1856).elected publications
